Heli skiing in Iceland
Be one of the first to open up this exciting new heliski frontier...
The birthplace and home of heli skiing in Iceland is the Troll Peninsula in the north of the country just below the Arctic Circle. Guests fly to Reykjavik and then on to Akureyri from where it is a short drive north to Klængshóll Lodge.
Why Heli Ski Here?
- Exploratory heli skiing in a remote and untouched region.
- Endless first descents and runs waiting to be named by you.
- Easy quick access from Europe and the east coast of north America
- A generally stable, maritime snowpack allows steeper terrain to be skied safely.
- Long days, stunning views and runs that end on the shore of the Arctic Ocean.
- Small groups of only four skiers / riders per helicopter load.
- Owner operated by Iceland's only UIAGM guide.
The Heliskiing
This is a vast, unexplored area with world-class heli skiing and thousands of slopes waiting for their first descents. Covering more than 4000 square kilometers of breathtaking Arctic mountains there is terrain to suit almost every skier's ability, be it steep couloirs or wide open glaciers.
Earlier in the season (March) you can find good powder especially at higher elevations and on north facing slopes. From late spring to early summer it is the perfect silky-smooth corn snow that make this region special. The mountains offer big descents of up to 1,500 metres ending directly on the shores of the Arctic Ocean... Throw in a mix of volcanic activity, hot springs and lava fields, and it is this is an experience as much about heli skiing as it is about raw adventure.
The highest degree of flexibility is maintained by never having more than three groups of four skiers or riders sharing the helicopter.
Lodging
Located in the heart of Iceland's best heli ski terrain, Klængshóll Lodge in Skíðadalur Valley is home for your arctic heli ski adventure. The Lodge is an ancient sheep farm that's been continually habited since Viking times around 850 AD. Fortunately, it has since been renovated.
The existing farm house was built in the late fifties. It has a large kitchen/dining room that is the heart and soul of the building and room for up to twelve guests in single, double and triple rooms with shared bathroom facilities. The rooms are spacious, and bright with comfortable beds, decorated in simple Scandinavian fashion. There is a large living room with comfortable couches a TV, wireless high speed internet and an extensive library.
Every day after skiing there is the possibility to visit one of the regions geo thermal baths for where you can mingle with the locals and catch up on the latest fishing and farming news!
All meals are prepared to the highest standards with a strong emphasis on local wild organic produce such as lamb, fresh fish and goose...Vegetarians worry not...you will be well looked after.
Helicopters & Safety
A-Star B2 helicopters are chartered from a local Icelandic company and flown by highly experienced Arctic pilots.
Safety standards are exemplary. All heli ski guides are seasoned professionals who have passed a series of comprehensive exams to qualify them as members of the U.I.A.G.M or A.C.M.G., the recognised Canadian and International Mountain Guide Associations.
With most guides having completed their training in Canada and worked within the heli ski industry there, many of the procedures and standards are taken directly from the Canadian system, which is widely recognized as setting the benchmark in heli ski operational standards.
