With snow-covered peaks rising straight from the ocean, jaw-dropping scenery and wildlife there is something special about Arctic Norway. Heliskiing is not possible in Norway so backcountry skiing here is all about earning your turns on touring skis or a splitboard. With a range of yachts, varying in type, size and comfort level at your disposal the possibilities for genuine exploration-style skiing are limitless.

The Norwegians call this type of experience, “Friluftsliv” which literally translates to “free air life”.....exploring and appreciating what nature has to offer.

Norway's spectacular mainland coastline stretches for over 1000 miles and features several mountain ranges that create ski touring opportunities. High latitudes mean that snow cover down to sea level is typical - a huge benefit compared to higher-elevation ski touring where altitude makes climbing much harder. Being so far north also opens up the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights or of skiing under the midnight sun. The season begins in the south where Alesund is a highlight and, as the season stretches into May and even June, the focus moves up to the Northern areas around Tromsø, Lyngen and Svalbard.

Trip Types

Our Norway ski-touring trips are flexible and can be tailored to your needs. Groups can be as small as 4 or as large as 12, while durations typically range from 4 to 9 nights. We can source both sailing and motor yachts with on-board experiences that range from "hands-on" to "don't lift a finger" luxury.

Many trips are entirely yacht-based, but it is also possible to access ski areas by fjord before staying ashore in beautiful boutique hotels or to combine ski-touring in Lofoten with resort and heliskiing in Riskgransen in neighbouring Sweden. We can fulfil requests for different durations of trip, size and type of vessel and the itinerary is flexible to navigate around the best skiing and weather.

Sea to Summit

The Lyngen Alps in Norway offer some of the best wilderness ski-touring in the world. Heliskiing is not permitted in Norway so the only way of accessing the virgin snow is to strap skins to your skis and use a bit of muscle to get to the top. The rewards are beyond imagination - no sign of civilisation, untouched mountains plastered in powder snow and scenery that will blow you away as you descend from summit to shore.

The quality of snow and the variety of terrain are truly awesome with endless opportunities for all abilities to explore anything from wide open spacious bowls to steep couloirs and Alaskan-looking spines.

Variations for Landlubbers

If boats aren't your thing or you're prone to seasickness, trips can be tailored to keep time at sea to a minimum. In the Sunnmøre Alps, you can shuttle by fast boat on calm fjords to serene boutique hotels or further north, Narvik is the perfect base from which to do some tours in the Lofoten Islands and to head to Riksgransen which offers both lift-served terrain and heliskiing.

Versatility

Choose from a motor-yacht to increase comfort and range or a sailing yacht to add another dimension to the trip. Go as a small group of 4-6 or as a far bigger group of friends or family. Change the trip duration, add nights ashore and adjust the itinerary to suit your skiing ambitions.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival Day

Meet & Greet at Tromsø Airport by the captain and your guide. Private transfer to the harbour. Arrive on-board sailing vessel Firebird, meet the rest of the crew and enjoy a warm drink and snacks while you settle in. Depending on the arrival time and weather conditions you may leave for the first ski area which is approximately a 2-hour sail.

Day 2 - Ski Touring Tester

After a hearty breakfast, the first day of ski touring begins. Skiing on this day will be designed as a kit check day and a chance for the guide to assess all the skiers’ abilities.

Day 3 - 7 - Ski Touring

Over the next five days, your trip of a life time will be designed by your guide. He will use his years of experience to find you the best snow and the most beautiful places you could ever ask for. There is a huge amount of ski options to choose from depending on the group’s abilities and snow conditions. Sail Back to Tromsø Harbour for your final night.

Day 8 - Departure Day

After your final breakfast on board the yacht your private transfer will arrive and take you to Tromsø Airport.
